The Students We Don't Always See

One of the things I've learned from working in student support is this:

There are many students we never fully see.

We see the student who aced the exam.

We see the student who won a competition.

We see the student who confidently speaks in class, leads an organization, or receives an award on stage.

But there are also students whose victories rarely make it into announcements, certificates, or social media posts.

The student who failed a quiz and found the courage to try again.

The student who spent hours studying after work because they needed to help support their family.

The student who attended class while quietly dealing with anxiety, grief, or personal challenges.

The student who was worried about tuition fees but continued to pursue their education anyway.

The student who felt alone during their first few weeks in college and slowly found their place in the community.

The student who almost gave up.

And the student who decided not to.

The longer I work with students, the more I realize that success is rarely about academics alone. Because behind every student is a story we may never fully know.

Sometimes the challenge is understanding Differential Equations.

Sometimes it's finding the confidence to speak up in class.

Sometimes it's learning how to manage stress.

And sometimes it's navigating relationships, family expectations, financial difficulties, career uncertainty, or simply the overwhelming question of:

"What do I do with my life?"

A student's journey is never just about grades.

It is about becoming. More capable. More resilient. More self-aware. More confident. More prepared for a future that often feels uncertain.

This is why student support matters.

Not because students are incapable of succeeding on their own.

But because no one should have to navigate every challenge alone.

Some students find support through their professors and advisers.

Some through their friends and organizations.

Some through career mentors.

Some through wellness programs and counseling services.

Some through academic support centers like iCARE.

And often, through a combination of all of these.

What I've come to appreciate is that every office, every mentor, every student leader, and every support staff member contributes to something much bigger than a service or a program.

Together, we help create an environment where students can keep moving forward.

Perhaps that's the part of education that doesn't get talked about enough.

Universities do not simply produce graduates.

At their best, they help people discover who they can become. And that transformation rarely happens because of a single class, a single office, or a single conversation. It happens through countless interactions with people who choose to care.

So if you're a student reading this, I hope you remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

It is often one of the most important steps toward growth.

And if you're someone who works in student support, teaching, mentoring, administration, or student leadership, I hope you remember that your work matters more than you may realize.

You may never know the full impact of a conversation, a consultation, an encouraging message, or a simple act of kindness.

But for a student who needed it at exactly the right moment, it might have changed everything.

The students we don't always see are often carrying the heaviest burdens.

They're also the ones reminding us why student support exists in the first place.

Because sometimes, what changes a student's life is not a program, a policy, or a grade.

It's knowing that someone cared enough to help them keep going.

Introducing Insights: Your Space to Think Out Loud (and Be Brilliant)

Ever had a thought that was too good to disappear and deserved more than a quick post on the Feed?

We share a lot on Briefcase... updates, announcements, quick thoughts, reactions.

That’s what the Feed is great for. But every now and then, there’s something more thoughtful… something longer… something that doesn’t quite fit into a quick post and a couple of emojis.

That’s exactly why we built Insights.

🤔 What are Insights?

Insights are personal blog-style posts inside Briefcase. They’re designed for ideas that need room... not just to be seen, but to be read.

An Insight could be:

  • A reflection after an event or experience
  • A lesson you learned the hard way (or the funny way)
  • An idea you’ve been sitting on for weeks
  • A story worth telling properly
  • Or a thought that starts with “I’ve been thinking about this a lot…”

Each Insight lives on its own dedicated page, which means it can be shared easily. You’ll even see a new Insights section on your profile (check mine out!).

If the Feed is where things happen, Insights are where we make sense of them.

🧠 Why not just post this on the Feed?

Because not every thought should be rushed.

The Feed is fast, scrollable, and immediate. Insights slow things down. They’re meant to be read intentionally, not skimmed between notifications.

I wanted a space where:

  • Writing feels thoughtful, not hurried
  • Ideas don’t get buried in 10 minutes
  • Context actually matters
  • And longer reflections feel… normal

Basically, a place where your ideas don’t have to fight for attention.

✍️ Why you should try writing an Insight

You don’t need to be a “writer.”

You don’t need perfect grammar.

You definitely don’t need to sound academic.

But writing Insights does help you:

  • Think more clearly
  • Reflect more deeply
  • Express ideas with confidence
  • Build a personal record of how you think and grow
  • Share perspectives that might genuinely help someone else

Also... future you will absolutely appreciate having these thoughts written down. Trust me.

😂 A few ground rules (nothing scary)

  • Be yourself... this isn’t an essay submission
  • Humor is welcome (please use responsibly 😄)
  • Respect matters more than perfection
  • If it sounds like you, you’re doing it right

No one is grading this. No one is counting commas. This is about ideas, not red ink.

🚀 Ready to post your first Insight?

If you’ve ever thought, “This deserves more than a quick post,” that’s your sign. Create Insight, give it a title, write what’s been on your mind, and share it.

You never know who might relate, who might learn something, or who might think, “I’m glad someone finally said that.” That’s why Insights exist.

And yes... I’m genuinely excited to read yours!
