About this event
Representation is important for any young adult. It is important that we are all able to see ourselves on screen, whether as the main character navigating life or as the ally sidekick that supports them throughout the main character's journey.
Our curated list of films and musical aims to:
- Allow representation and learning through storytelling - Allies may not experience the stress and troubles of their LGBTQIA+ peers... difficulty fitting into societal norms, gender-based discrimination, fear of authenticity, and so much more... and that's why it's important that we can see representations of it in media.
- Create a space for meaningful discussion - With new learnings come new questions. Why do acts of gender-based discrimination happen? What actions can I do, as an ally, to prevent them? How can I show my care and support for the people in my life? Now is the best time to sit with these questions and think about how you might answer them. With your Guidance Counselor and school Psychometrician watching with you, you are more than free to pop in a quick question or have a little chitchat during the viewing.
- Normalize what some may feel is too different - The more we see, the more we are able to learn. To people who are outside of the LGBTQIA+ community, concepts like coming out or struggling with one's identify can feel so strange and unfamiliar. Beyond the four corners of the institution exits a diverse pool of people beyond what we may know and comprehend. Exposure and normalization of different identities, expressions, and sexualities can help set the tone to becoming an effective ally.
